Illuminated Sign / On-Air light fitting
These
classic studio signs are used extensively throughout the
UK and are regarded by many as the industry standard studio
warning light. They are regularly seen at most radio,
TV and recording studios and provide a clear warning to
those around thanks to their distinctive 'wrap around'
design. They are particularly suitable for use in corridors
as the unit provides a wide viewing angle when illuminated.
The units are supplied with a tough translucent polycarbonate
cover which snaps over the base and does not require any
special tools for removal. As standard, we provide red
covers printed with the 'On-Air' or 'Recording' legend.
(Please specify when ordering).

There
are two base types available - Type A is most suitable
for recording studios and meeting / interview rooms. Type
B is designed for direct connection to a mixing desk's
microphone channels and are common in radio studio environments.
Outwardly they are identical in appearance; Your choice
depends on how the light is to be used and controlled.
See below for further details.
Both types are designed for permanent installation and
require a mains power supply. Fitting instructions are
included, however you should contact a professional electrician
or suitably qualified person should you be in any doubt
as how to connect this product.

|
Type
A.
This type has no low-voltage switching circuitry and
typically is controlled using a standard mains light
switch. This type would be suitable in recording studios,
interview and meeting rooms, where you wish to provide
a visual warning to those around you that the room
is in use.
It can be connected to the mains supply in the same
way as a domestic light fitting controlled by a wall
switch.
Type A units should not be connected directly to studio
mixing desks or other low-voltage control circuits
without the use of additional Opto-isolated control
units. |
|
If
you are happy to manually switch the light
on and off using a wall switch then choose
Type A.

Type
B
Type B units have an integrated mains switching facility
meaning that they can be controlled directly from
a mixing desk or other low voltage control source.
Using this type is the easiest way to provide a warning
to others that a microphone may be 'live' for example
and can be connected to the closing contacts on a
mixing desk microphone channel.
Simply connect a low voltage cable between the closing
contacts on your mixing desk and the low voltage contacts
on the light fitting. Shorting Pins 1 and 2, will
turn the light on. Shorting Pins 1 and 3 will flash
the light at the rate set by the internal jumpers.
Type B units still require a mains power source, however
the integrated opto-coupled zero crossing mains switch
module enables the unit to be controlled directly
by low voltage sources. |
|
Type
B units are designed to be connected to
mixing desks allowing the sign to illuminate
when a microphone channel is opened for
example

QUESTIONS
ABOUT THIS PRODUCT
|
Q:
Can these lights be used outside?
A: No. The light fittings are designed for
internal use only
Q: Can I connect a Type A unit directly to my
mixing desk microphone contacts?
A: No. Type A units are designed for mains
switching control only. It is possible to use the
Type A unit with a mixing desk, however you should
purchase an Opto-switcher to electrically isolate
your mixers low voltage closing contacts from the
higher 230V mains supply of the light fitting. The
Opto-switcher acts like a relay and closes the 230V
contacts on receiving a low voltage control voltage
from the desk, whilst at the same time providing
complete electrical isolation of the two circuits.

Q: I'm in the USA. Do you provide these light
fittings for use over here?
A: We can supply 110V versions of both Type A &
Type B units to special order. Cancellations will
incur a charge. Please contact
us for pricing and delivery costs.
